LC Hoops started in 1995 as South Lake Basketball League formed by
South Lake Recreation, Inc. both being a completely volunteer
organization. The first
years South Lake Basketball
League sponsored AAU basketball Teams for Girls and Boys.
South
Lake Basketball League
hosted its own AAU tournament in 1998.
With twenty one teams
participating from Florida
and Georgia it
was necessary to utilize South Lake High, Gray Middle and Clermont Middle Schools.
In 2001 the girls AAU 12U team was the World Champs by
beating out a Girl’s team from Mexico.
Over the years the Basketball league has had up to 550 boys
and girls a season playing basketball from
South
Lake County.
In 2004 the Board of South Lake
Basketball thought it best to change the name to LC Hoops.
It also was decided to stress the
ART, Academics, Respect,
and Team Work this is to be the motto and philosophy of the league.
The action was taken as a new high school was opened, East
Ridge, so the League would not be confused as to be affiliated with
South Lake High.
As the fight for facilities’ became more competitive causing the
usage cost to rise. LC
Hoops in order to off set these higher fes charged.
Currently the fees per child playing, just for gym usages are
about $95.00. In the
early days thes charged by the schools has steadily increased its
feee total registration fee was as low as $35 dollars a
season. As our population
grows and our school gyms are taxed more and more we anticipate an
increase in fees, possibly next year.
If it was not for the dedicated volunteers of the organizations,
directors, referees, coaches and all the good parents of our
community – we wouldn’t have Basketball today.
Each season about 100 adults
step forward to donate their time and efforts for the kids in the
community.
With the increase in fees for facilities the long term
goal is to have our own facility and offering more programs for the
kids and the
community.
